A night of music and celebration turned into tragedy in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, where the roof of a popular nightclub collapsed.

The collapse of Jet Set club has killed at least 221 people and more than 150 were injured, authorities said on Thursday (April 10). The incident happened just before 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) on Tuesday at the Jet Set club, officials said.

Survivors described scenes of panic as the ceiling gave way, trapping scores of people under rubble.
Head of Emergency Operations Juan Manuel Méndez estimated that his team had "24 to 36 hours left" to try to find survivors under the rubble.

After the incident, anxious families have gathered outside the wreckage for news about their missing relatives. Mourners wept outside the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo as crews sorted through the rubble.
The concert had drawn politicians, athletes and other prominent figures, hundreds had gathered for a live performance by merengue star Rubby Pérez, who’s life was honored Thursday, during a funeral service attended by the country’s president.
Dominican Republic Government said the cause of the incident would be investigated once recovery efforts wrapped up.
